Part 1

Malcolm Allen, Welland, ON

Mr. Speaker, Ontario apple and tender fruit farmers have been heavily hit by a spring frost that is expected to devastate the industry this year. Apple farmers alone are expected to lose a staggering 80% of this year's crop.

Ontario farmers are major producers of Canada's apple crop. This impact will be felt widely.

Mr. Malcolm Allen (Welland, NDP): Mr. Speaker, not a day goes by that I do not hear from another frustrated constituent in my riding who, like so many across this country, is waiting for employment insurance benefits.

Mr. Malcolm Allen (Welland, NDP): Mr. Speaker, when the Conservatives launched their anti-Wheat Board agenda we warned it would hurt Canadian farmers. Now Viterra's sell-off will leave the majority of Canadian grain handling in foreign control.

These are world leading assets, built by Canadian farmers. This is a shortsighted sell-out that will strip us of a leading Canadian company and leave farmers vulnerable to foreign interests.

Why will the Conservatives not realize their misguided priorities are hurting Canadian farmers?

(Malcolm Allen, Welland): Mr. Speaker, we now know that the Conservatives have food safety on the chopping block. That means cuts to food inspectors who helped and will help prevent a listeriosis crisis from happening in the country again.

Mr. Malcolm Allen (Welland, NDP): Madam Speaker, this past Wednesday, the agriculture committee actually learned that only 2% of food imported into Canada is actually inspected. Yet 100% of the products that we produce in the country that we send abroad are indeed inspected. Canadians expected, in fact believed, that all imported food was inspected. The agriculture committee now knows that is not true.
